Cruising experience
Our boats are so easy to steer that no licence is required, and many of our costumers are first timers. We will take you through the handling of the craft when you arrive.
On board
On arrival you will be given a Capitan's Log with tourist information as well as technical details about the boat itself. On board, you will find a cruising guidebook providing a large-scale map of your route. This gives useful information such as where to moor or fill up the water tank, as well as indicating locks and the distances between them. You are free to order your own cruising guidebook at the same time as you book your boat, and a price list is included with your booking form. Of course, you will be cruising safe in the knowledge that if you have any questions you can contact our base seven days a week.
Navigation
With »Connoisseur boats« you will be cruising waterways that are easy to navigate with a speed limit of 4 mph on the canals and 6 mph on the rivers. Your trip is all about the pleasure of being on the water, so enjoy every minute and take your time. You will cruise for an average of 5 hours a day, but there's no need to set yourself rigid targets-cruise as the mood takes you, exploring the countryside and taking in the sights.
Locks
Going through the locks is part of the ritual of being on the water. Each one takes about 20 minutes to navigate. Chatting to the lock keeper and people on other boats makes for a pleasant break in the trip and you will soon become familiar with the routine.
Mooring
When it comes to mooring you can choose to spend the night in a marina (there is sometimes a fee) or simply moor up alongsid the towpath in the middle of the countryside.
Local attractions
Stop at your own pleasure and picnic under the trees, do a spot of fishing or take a cycle ride into the sorrounding countryside and discover its hidden treasures. Browse a traditional village market, visit a chateau or evev one of the vineyards that line many of the riverbanks. Make sure you take time to sample the region's culinary delights or buy wine from the local producer's cellar. Wherever you cruise, from spring through to autumn you will be able to enjoy the local festivals, village fetes and carnivals, and really feel part of the local area.
Fishing
River holidays are terrific for fishing enthusiasts so don't forget to bring your equipment. However you must have a fishing licence.
Cycling
Bicycles are also useful to have on board for riding along the towpath and into the countryside or fetching hot croissants for breakfast. We hire bikes at each base, although it is advisable to order them when you make your booking.
